Our Togaku company believes that it was a Togaku priest at a temple in Takasaki, Japan, who invented the first toy called Daruma, in honor of Saint Borhidharma. Whether this is true or a legend, history is silent. However, ancient Japanese books mention that in the past, in some prefectures, the Daruma doll was also called Togaku, in honor of its creator.
In 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War, a young officer named Mikhail from the Russian Empire traveled to Japan, where he fell in love with a young Japanese woman named Ameya. Ameya's father had been making Japanese Daruma dolls for many years, a craft inherited from his grandfather.
During these same years, Mikhail married Amei and adopted a new Japanese name, Togaku. Thus , Togaku Daruma Factory was born.
